Want some Social Media ROI?

Twitter Webinar: Q/A from 6/17/10

Each week we get hundreds of people that attend or free webinar series. I want to thank all of your for taking the time to learn more about social media and apply it to your businesses and lives. It will be rewarding for you.

Here are a list of questions we received that were pending. If we missed any, please feel free to submit them by posting a question.

Lucy at United: Q: How does Twitter make money?

A: Interesting that you should ask, Lucy. We just posted a blog that talks about this. Read about Twitter discovering a business model.

Martin at Legacy: Q: How do you customize the look of a Twitter page?

A: You can customize the look and feel of your Twitter page by designing a background image and selecting colors that match your companies branding guidelines all with the Twitter interface. You will need to hire a graphic designer to make it look great. And we can help you out at eRocketFuel as well.

Ada at Motorola: Q: Why would a large company want to get into social media?

A: Because in order for large companies to grow, they have to be agile like smaller companies, and they have to talk to their customers. There are plenty of large companies that have embraced social media. Starbucks, Apple, Domino’s, Ford…

David at New Market:  Q: Two different people set up accounts for the same thing.  Is there any way to merge 2 accounts together?

A: No there is not. But it’s not that hard to just start pushing people from one account to the other manually.

Anna at New Market: Q: How do we track results?

A: Anna: You can track results through the # of followers within a ratio of the people that you follow, or just the # of followers. You may also track via the # of links people click thru. And of course, there are the # of engagements.

Alexander: Q: Can you repeat the names of the applications you mentioned?

HootSuite.com, CoTweet.com, and TwitterCounter.com. There are just a few of the many valuable Twitter tools out there.

Social Media World Wide Updates

In the past month, there have been quite a bit of changes in world wide web of social media.

Twitter grew up and found a business model. It’s called Advertising. Yes, we were very surprised. :)
Well, we knew that one was coming. So how are they going to do it – or should I say, how have they started?

They are selling ads on Promoted Tweets based on keywords. So let’s say Starbucks wants to blast out some ads on coffee refills over Father’s Day weekend. They give Twitter a stash of cash and then you, me, and our aunts and uncles will see Ads that appear Above and Below our Tweet Threads. Example below. Drink it up.

Twitter has also announced that they will offer commercial accounts sometime this year for “hardcore” Twitter users that want to have multiple accounts and detailed statistics. Sounds like a winner.

Facebook has nearly half a billion people.

And they’ll earn a cool billion dollars this year in advertising revenues.

The new deal’eo on Facebook is the LIKE feature. They took away Become a Fan and replaced it with I LIKE IT LIKE THAT. It’s okay. It works. The thought here is that more people will participate with a LIKE rather then give away their MOJO fan points because really, you can only be a fan of 500 things at most. Right? We’ll see how this plays out for all of us affected.

Community Pages were introduced this month as well. You’re probably saying, wait, isn’t that what Facebook is – a bunch of community pages? Well, yeah and … they’ve introduced community pages to give the “community’ fans power to control ‘topic’ pages. So let’s say you have a killer stamp collection and you start up “I Like Pretty Stamps”. Guess what, once you reach a large threshold, Facebook says, “Sorry John Zimmerman, we will now take away your page and give it to the world.” Yeah, it kind of blows. But really now people, who cares?

Focus on your business, and start groups and pages. And you will do well as long as you communicate with your peeps every week.
